History of Postcard Collecting
Postcard collecting is known as deltiology. Professor Randall Rhoades of Ashland, Ohio, coined deltiology in 1945 as the accepted description for the study of picture postcards. Although, the word deltiology took up to 20 years to appear in dictionaries.
Compared to philately*, the identification of a postcard's place and time of production can often be an impossible task. Unlike stamps, postcards are produced in a decentralized and unregulated manner. For this reason, some deltiologists choose to limit their acquisitions to cards by specific artists, themes, and publishers, or by time and place.
*Philately is the study of stamps, postal history, and related items. Philatelists also collect, appreciate, and research activities on stamps, such as postmarks and other philatelic products. Philately involves more than just stamp collecting, which does not necessarily involve the study of stamps. It is possible to be a philatelist without owning any stamps. For instance, stamps being studied may be very rare, residing only in museums.
